Letter No. 38          Nurses and officers Red Cross hut Allerey France  March 19, 1919
My dear Frances,
This is a most beautiful morning I have it free.  Am in the operating room now with very little to do-less than in the wards.  This is the morning for dancing class so I came over early thinking you might like a line.  There is very little to relate.
Expect to get a three day leave soon-two days spent in Paris and the third at Rheims or somewhere up front.  Miss Sutter, my roommate, went to Paris last night with a party of nurses-the third that has gone so far.  I have put in a request for my next long leave-two weeks this time including travel time-with Miss Sutter the first of May.  We want to go to Italy.  Of course I would like to go to England, but I think it foolish to do so as I have been there twice and may never have another chance to go to Italy.
I hope not to be ordered home before taking that trip, but will be quite ready to do so upon my return.  In fact I think it would be very nice to reach Clear Lake sometime in June and all be together this summer.
Glad to hear you are to spend next winter in California.  How would you like to take a course in Laboratory work or x-ray and have a position in a hospital or a doctor's office.  That will probably be my next move.
Miss le Gros and I played bridge last night against a couple f officers and each won a rubber which was not so bas as they consider themselves card sharks.  Not many officers are left here now as each day more are returning to Beaune.  Only the Agriculture school is to be here-the practical side of it.  By the way, I believe one of the instructors is from the Minnesota School of Agriculture.
I had no mail for two weeks and then got several letters-Margaret's of Feb 10th, 21st, and March 1st, and yours, mother's, and Alice's of Feb 23rd.  I think I lost one from Margaret between the 10th and 21st.
I believe the nurses of Base 26 sailed last week.  Hope they have a smooth passage.  It has been stormy.
Haven't been able to get a Stars and Stripes for two weeks so miss a great deal of official information regarding the AEF as to the sailing of units etc.
Haven't heard from Uncle since Christmas.  Expect he is looking for me home.  I sent him a card telling of the departure of Base 26 without me, so he will not make a trip to New York to meet me.  I wonder if Joe Mosser is still over.
What did Charlie Stickney send home?  Believe I told you of visiting a salvage pile and getting shell casings, a French and German bayonet, and a French gas mask.  The Normal school may have the latter to add to its collection if it hasn't already one.
Haven't heard from the St. B girls at  Commercy since #26 left.  They are taking care of 25 div. Men booked to sail home in April, so the girls will be here some little time yet.  The girls in Treves are happy.  From all accounts Treves and Coblentz are beautiful cities.  I am sorry I did not get up there.
We heard from Miss Sherrill who was the YMCA worker with Base 26.  She had a delightful vacation on the Riviera and was back in Paris.  Is not going to Coblentz as she intended but Rheims instead to work with the returning French refugees so we will see her on our trip up there.
Glad to hear Carlos Case is safe.  From a letter of Margaret's I feared he was missing.  Only one hut is now open.  Haven't been to a movie for some time, and it is crowded every evening with students.  Nor have we had a troupe here for two weeks.
Orchestra is tuning up.  My love to Marion and Helen.
                    Affectionately, Jane
My transfer would make no difference to my allotment.  Hope you have it by this.
