Letter No. 32 Sunday, January 26, 1919 Allerey, France
My Dear family,
Margaret's letter of Jan. 6th, Alice's from the 8th, and a card from uncle reached me today, also the enclosed from Mrs. Tunstall.
Gotlieb seems to have seen considerable over here. I wonder if he had the responsible position the paper gives him.
BH 26 is considerably split up. Thirteen of us were detached thinking it our only chance of staying over. The an order came from General Headquarters ordering ten nurses up front and twenty to stay here. We were counted among the twenty to stay here but ten who had not expressed a desire to remain are being sent up front among them four other St. B girls. They go in the morning to a base hospital near Bar le Duc and hope to be sent into Germany. Six of us are here with Evacuation 19 and fourteen with base hospital 97. The rest of Base 26, about 36 nurses, all the boys, and most of the doctors (four were detached and went up toward Germany this morning) hope to be sent home soon. The camp is to be broken up tout de suite. All patients will be out in another week and we are wondering what will happen to us. In the army nothing is known from ones day to the next. I may be on my way home when this reaches you.
Evac 19 has no patients. Three of us expect to go up to Dijon tomorrow returning Tuesday afternoon.
We are leading a lazy life. I still have my same room but go to Evac. 19 for mess. Tea is served in several of the hospitals every afternoon so I take one and sometimes two. Evac. 19 entertained Base 26 yesterday and the compliment is being returned tomorrow. There is a dance somewhere nearly every night but dancing is not one of my accomplishments. Friday night we had a progressive bridge party-just the nurses of Base 26-and we play cards in out rooms frequently. This idleness I do not enjoy and if I cannot get up front I want to get home. The doctors are all so anxious to home to their work.
Went to Church this morning and heard a splendid sermon by a Congregational Chaplain. Must return to 19 now with the bunch of mail fro Miss Carlson. Will write in a few days and hope to tell you we are moving.
Love to all, Jane
