January 10th Left Nice at 11:30 am. Again we were fortunate the porters giving us reservations just as the train was pulling out. The aisles fill as usual. Reached Avignon at 9 pm. My reservation was good to Paris so handled over t a grateful officer. Went to a hotel near the depot for the night and the next morning to Nimes for the day-a ride of 1 ½ hours. Met a you Lieut. There and pent the day with him visiting the interesting Roman ruins. Had our pictures taking in the famous Roman amphitheatre. It is now a leave area for enlisted men and they are beginning to arrive. Met some boys who had not seen an American woman for months and how they were to see us! Returned to Avignon that night and went to the Hotel du Europe, a famous hostelry and as cheap as the other hotel. Had a delicious dinner and a good night rest. Napoleon stopped there several times as did other royalties. (Note-I recall the old, whit-haired, dignified, waiter who served us dinner and the disgusted expression on his face when Miss Samuelson insisted upon having the vegetable served with the meat instead each as a separate course as was the French custom. Sunday morning we visited the Palace of the Popes which has just been opened to the public (this is where the Popes lived 1309-1377 when they were driven out of Italy). The gold which was stored there during the was having been returned to the banks. We left there at 3 pm for Paris arriving at 9 am Monday the 13th. Couldn't get reservations on the crowded train but officers made room for us with them. Had no difficulty in securing a room in a hotel near the Gare de Lyon. Visited Notre Dame (Rose window not in yet nor those in St. Chapelle), Church of the Madeline, Sculpture gallery at the Louvre. All art galleries are still closed as the pictures are in the south of France. Walked considerably along the boulevards, it is such a beautiful city. Went to bed early dead tired.
