January 7th Anna Samuelson is my companion. She is a graduate of the Swedish hospital. Unusual weather for Nice we are told-raining-a great disappointment as I expected to bask in the sun. We have rain in Allerey! We took an automobile trip, Misses Muse, Samuelson, self and an officer from the hotel. Left at 8:30 a.m. and returned at 5 p.m. The most beautiful road along the rocky, irregular coast Nice, Monoca, Monto Carlo, Mentone, and across the Italian border. Had lunch at Mentone and then drove up into the mountains stopping at two old Roman villages. Lemon and orange trees laden with fruit but small compared to ours and not a good flavor. Most interesting how the side of the mountains are terraced up to the sheer rocks.
Visited Monte Carlo gaming tables before they were opened to the public. None in uniform permitted to play-but they offer the officers changes of clothes! The Palace of the Prince not opened until the afternoon so we saw only the exterior. Went through his most interesting museum and beautiful aquarium. Attended the entertainment at the YMCA in the evening.
