From the postcards written on my leave to the French Riviera in January 1919
January 4th: Left Allerey at 8:30 a.m. arriving at Chalon a half-hour later. Waited there for the 3 p.m. train from Paris. Fortunate in securing corridors. Train packed from Lyon on, many officers standing in the corridors. Had a good dinner on the train at 6 o'clock. A waiter goes through the train in the afternoon handing out tickets so you will know at which series you will get a seat in the dining car. We travel first class and pay ¼ fare which means 33 francs from Allerey to Nice. Train was late. We reached Marseille at 5 a.m. very tired. Went to a hotel, had a tub bath and breakfast, then a street car ride along the coast and had our first view of the Mediterranean, a very stormy one as it was raining and a strong wind blowing. Many beautiful villas facing the sea. Took the train at 11:30. Again were fortunate at getting seats while many stood. A canteen worker for the Red Cross, Miss Muse, in the compartment and officers. Reached Nice at 7 a.m. and went to Luxemburg Annex, had dinner and went to bed. The Riviera full of Americans.
