Letter No. 19     Tuesday evening October 22nd 1918.
My dear Frances,
Am sending you the enclosed thinking you might like to send me a box of hard candies.  Should have sent it a week ago when first received.  You will probably receive it too late to mail.  Never mind, many boxes will not reach their correct destinations.  There is nothing that I need that will go into a box of these dimensions and my candy will be gone by Christmas.  If it doesn't reach me whoever gets it will appreciate it.  Have not suffered from lack of sweets yet but hear that when the present supply of jam is used we will have no more as it is not being shipped over.  That will be rather hard on us as I haven't seen much fruit here except grapes and they will soon be over.  Paid a franc the other day for an apple and 6 francs for three large bunches of grapes.
Wrote home the other day acknowledging your letter No 2.  Yesterday received eight among them yours of Sept 22nd and 29th also the two weekly papers.  Life will be coming in a few days.
Miss Wenck was with us but asked to be transferred.  Her address now is Am. Base Hospital No 15 APO 706.  She often spoke of Mrs. Lewis and of writing to her.
Boys of the Convalescent Camp have just been over to our Mess Hall entertaining us with songs and recitations.  They gave two vaudeville performances in their hut before the epidemic of influenza since which all large gatherings are forbidden.  You seem to be having it worse in the States than we are here.  We haven't many of the unit ill at present.  Our ward surgeon is convalescing from pneumonia and going to Nice for a few weeks rest.  Worth while having it almost if you can go there.
The sun shone yesterday but rain again today.  One the next sunshiny day I want to ride the bicycle to Verdun.  We have only one bike now the other having been taken over by the Red Cross and distributed among the various units here.  The longest trip I took was to Beaune and back.
     Lights out in five minutes.
                    Affectionately, Jane.
Thanks for the Kodak pictures.  Very pretty dress but why behead it?
