Dear Folks,
Letters from Margaret, Fanny, Marion, Alice, and Mack.  The latter's father is slowly gaining.
Did not hear Roosevelt Monday night.  It was a mistake, he spoke last night but we had to go to the Armory for  little military drill-about 700 nurses-as if here on the 18th we take part in a big Red Cross parade down 5th Ave.  We look fro the rest of our equipment tomorrow.  The last three days have been so hot we are not so keen about donning the warm uniforms as we were three weeks ago.  Received our first pay from Uncle Sam yesterday-700 of us.
This afternoon five of us had an auto ride with a Mrs. Hamilton who has two sons and a husband, Colonel Hamilton, in France.  I fancy she is a society lady who was acting this afternoon as hostess at a club house that looks after wives and families of soldiers and sailors.  She told us s spy was caught at the Waldorf Astoria the other night dressed in the uniform of an American Army officer.
The Vaterland on its last trip took 16,000.  They must be packing them in like sardines and having two shifts in the berths!!  What would a seasick mortal do?
Miss Samuelson has gone to The Little Church around the Corner.  She likes High Church.
You haven't told me whether or not Janet's baby has red hair? One of our girls has been sent to a hospital with mumps.  She must have brought them with her from Fort Ripley.
The vaccination is working on some of the girls.  Mine will have to be done over Monday.
               All for now,  Affectionately, Jane.
